Types of Urinary Incontinence

Urge Incontinence

  • Urge Incontinence – is also known as Overactive Bladder (OAB)
    • Sudden compelling desire to urinate
    • Frequency – typically described as > 8 voids per 24 hour
  • “Dry” OAB – sudden compelling desire to urinate without leakage
  • “Wet” OAB – sudden compelling desire to urinate with leakage

Mixed Incontinence

Continuous incontinence is the loss of bladder control

Stress Incontinence

Urine leakage caused by activities such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting, exercising.

  • Urethral hypermobility – leakage caused by the excessive movement of the female urethra due to a weakened urogenital diaphragm. It describes the instability of the urethra in relation to the pelvic floor muscles
  • Intrinsic sphincter deficiency is a condition in which the urethral sphincter is unable to fully close and generate enough resting urethral closing pressure to retain urine in the bladder.
  • Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is a general term referring to the diverse effects of neurological disease on urinary tract function. The neurological regulation of the individual organs and their voluntary and reflex control is complex, and mediated at the brain and several levels of the spinal cord.
