Streaming services like Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video have allowed viewers to access much more content than ever before – but alas, more options mean more choices. If you have been scouring your streaming service looking for entertaining shows with strong female leads, you will definitely want to check out some of these interesting options.

Here are five must see tv shows with powerful female leads:

The Handmaid’s Tale

RATING: R

Perhaps, you have been told by your friends and family to watch The Handmaid’s Tale, and if you haven’t been told yet, you’re being told now. This revolutionary show explores a reinvented America designed to save humanity from itself. The male leaders of the Handmaid’s Tale world believe a woman’s role is to serve man and in this mostly infertile society, some women are victims of government enforced rape. While this show is not for everyone (it can get very graphic) the message overall is about what is lost when females are dehumanized and what can be gained by rising up against injustice.

Grey’s Anatomy

RATING: PG-13

Grey’s Anatomy provides sixteen seasons of strong women of every age and race dominating the surgical field and leading the way in medical innovation.  Not only does this show contain compelling storylines and, yes, plenty of drama, but it also addresses relevant topics such as sexuality, divorce, miscarriage, death, and disaster through the eyes of its predominately female hospital staff.  You are sure to be hooked from the very first episode.

Jane the Virgin

RATING: PG-13

Jane the Virgin tackles topics difficult topics like sex, immigration, religion, and sexuality through the lens of a telenovela. The story begins when Jane, a virgin, is accidentally inseminated during a routine visit to her gynecologist, turning everyone’s world upside down. It’s a heartwarming show that preaches the value of family and tradition while also encouraging creativity and bravery. Drama, romance, mystery, comedy – this show has it all, which means there is something in it for everyone.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

RATING: PG-13

Whoever said women can’t be funny has never watched the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Amazon’s breakout hit follow’s Miriam “Midge” Maisel on her journey to become a famous standup comedian in the 1950’s. A show about finding your way, breaking barriers, and being yourself, this is a must see for those looking for a laugh and a message.

Game of Thrones

RATING: R

There are very few shows on television that can match the variety and number of strong female leads as in the Game of Thrones. The epic battle for the title, Ruler of the Iron Throne, showcases strong female characters embarking on different journeys throughout the kingdom of Westeros. The show shatters the typical characterization of women in fantasy adventures. If you enjoy stories of dragons, knights, princesses and heroes, and can handle serious violence, strong language, and frequent nudity, then this show is for you.
